Demonstrating conventional takeoff
Before the X-35 can demonstrate its more unique functions it must first prove that it can operate like a normal, high performance combat airplane. It must take off.

Behind its takeoff are hundreds of thousands of hours of preparation both on the design table and in its manufacture. Lockheed Martin's winning design carries technology from its F22 (air superiority) next generation fighter bid including methods and materials that make the X-35 a more durable, maintainable and easier- to-fly aircraft than previous designs.
