Mid-air refueling
As a global military power, the United States armed forces can require the Joint Strike Fighter to fly long distances to reach a theatre of war thousands of miles away from its home base.

To aid in rapid movement of its forces, the USAF maintains a network of aerial fuel tankers that enable planes to fly for hours before reaching their destination or target. Mid-air refueling is a delicate procedure requiring coordination between the tanker crew and the refueling pilot.
